somatic therapy
inviting our body into the conversation
Somatic therapy is an umbrella term for different kinds of counselling that focus on the mind-body connection. It’s based on the belief that our thoughts and emotions influence our physical body, and vice versa.
Who somatic therapy is for:
Maybe you’ve tried other kinds of therapy, but are still stuck with all the same feelings
Maybe you find yourself analyzing your feelings, and you can’t quite figure out how to actually feel them in your body
Maybe when you start paying attention to your feelings, you get totally overwhelmed and it ends up making things worse
Maybe all this talk about “sitting with your feelings” makes no sense to you and you’re looking for some step-by-step guidance
Maybe you’re searching for a more engaging and creative approach to caring for yourself
Somatic therapy can help with:
learning why you respond in certain ways when you’re stressed
experiencing an embodied sense of safety and calm
shifting out of your typical stress response(s)
living in the present moment
healing childhood wounds
showing up for yourself and others with more compassion
living out your values in your daily life
moving through intense emotions
releasing judgement about your experiences and emotions
What to expect in a session:
I’ll invite you to bring your attention to your internal bodily experience, what’s going on inside beneath your cognitive mind
Together, we’ll cultivate a sense of curiosity and non-judgement towards whatever you find inside
I’ll help you adjust your experience if things become too uncomfortable or overwhelming (ask me how in a consultation!)
I’ll offer open-ended suggestions to connect with your inner experience, such as checking for tightness or spaciousness, movement or stillness, etc.
I may suggest certain somatic exercises based on your goals, or checking in on your internal experience regarding a theme or metaphor you’ve spoken about
Still have some questions?
Ask away! We want you to be comfortable and confident starting your somatic counselling journey.
